The minimum ceiling height for golf simulator use is about 9 feet, with 10 feet giving most golfers comfortable clearance. Aim for about 12 feet of width and, depending on your launch monitor, 10 to 17 feet of depth. Radar units that sit behind the ball need the most depth (about 14 to 16 feet); camera units that sit beside the ball can work in far less.
Enter your room below. The calculator compares your ceiling, width and depth with the manufacturer figures in this guide and gives a fit, tight or no-fit verdict for both radar and camera launch monitors, with a top-down plan of your space.
Golf simulator room size calculator
How the calculator decides: fit, tight or no fit
These are the thresholds the calculator uses. Every number comes from a launch monitor maker's own setup or room-planning guide.
| Dimension | Fit | Tight | No fit | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ceiling height (any unit) | 10 ft or more | 9 ft to under 10 ft | Under 9 ft | SkyTrak: 10 ft "ample", many say 9 ft is enough; FlightScope: 9 ft absolute minimum, 10–12 ft recommended |
| Room width (any unit) | 12 ft or more | 10 ft to under 12 ft | Under 10 ft | SkyTrak: 12 ft suggested, 10 ft needed for a driver; FlightScope: 12 ft; Voice Caddie: 10–12 ft |
| Depth, radar behind the ball | 16 ft or more | 14 ft to under 16 ft | Under 14 ft | Garmin R10 manual: 6–8 ft behind + 8 ft to net; Rapsodo: a little more than 14 ft; FlightScope Mevo Gen2: 16 ft |
| Depth, camera beside the ball | 15 ft or more | 10 ft to under 15 ft | Under 10 ft | SkyTrak FAQ: 10 x 10 ft minimum with a net; SkyTrak Studio 8': 15 ft minimum room depth |
Measure depth wall to wall, including the net or enclosure. Add 1 to 2 feet of width if right- and left-handed golfers will share the bay (SkyTrak's advice).
Ceiling height for a golf simulator
Ceiling height is the dimension you can't easily fix, so check it first.
- 10 feet or more: comfortable for most golfers with a driver. SkyTrak says a 10-foot ceiling typically offers ample clearance, and FlightScope recommends 10 to 12 feet, especially for taller golfers.
- 9 to 10 feet: workable for many golfers. SkyTrak notes that many golfers say 9 feet is enough, and Voice Caddie's room guide calls for at least 9 feet. FlightScope calls 9 feet the absolute minimum.
- Under 9 feet: risky with a driver. SkyTrak's smallest studio lists an 8-foot minimum ceiling for the enclosure itself, but SkyTrak also says a standard golfer needs at least 9 feet to swing a driver safely.
Remember that a hitting mat raises you an inch or two, and an enclosure has its own height. SkyTrak lists its studio enclosures at 7 ft 6 in tall (Studio 8'), 8 ft 6 in (Studio 10' and 12') and 10 ft (Studio 13' Deep).
The driver test
SkyTrak recommends a simple check before you buy anything: stand where the ball will be, grab your driver and take a slow, deliberate practice swing. If you feel any hesitation at the top or in the follow-through, you need more clearance. Do it in socks on the actual floor, then add the mat height.
Room width
Your swing needs space on both sides, and the screen or net sets a minimum too.
- SkyTrak says a standard golfer needs at least 10 feet of width to swing a driver without hitting the walls, and suggests 12 feet for a more spacious feel.
- FlightScope recommends 12 feet for a comfortable full-swing setup with the Mevo Gen2, and notes that narrower rooms may require offsetting the hitting mat.
- Screens and nets typically run from 8 to 13 feet wide in SkyTrak's range, and wider enclosures need wider rooms: SkyTrak's 12-foot studio needs a 13-foot minimum room width.
If one player is left-handed, either center the hitting area (which needs extra width) or plan two mat positions.
Room depth by launch monitor type
Depth is where launch monitor choice matters most. A radar unit has to sit behind you, aimed down the target line, so it adds several feet before you even count the ball-to-screen gap.
Radar and hybrid units behind the ball
| Launch monitor | Distance behind the ball | Ball to net or screen | Maker's total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garmin Approach R10 | 6–8 ft | At least 8 ft indoors | About 14–16 ft |
| Rapsodo MLM2PRO | 6.5–8.5 ft | At least 8 ft | "A little more than 14 feet" |
| Rapsodo MLM2XPRO | 7.5 ft | At least 8 ft | "A little more than 15 feet" |
| FlightScope Mevo Gen2 | 8 ft (7–9 ft range) | At least 8 ft | 16 ft; room of 12 W x 10 H x 16 L ft recommended |
| Voice Caddie SC4 Pro | About 5 ft | 10 ft recommended | Room of at least 10 W x 15 D x 9 H ft |
Owners of radar units often report that a little more ball flight than the minimum improves indoor readings, so treat these as floors, not targets. Our Garmin R10 review covers the indoor trade-offs in detail.
Camera units beside the ball
Camera and camera-plus-radar units such as SkyTrak and Square Golf sit next to the ball and photograph it at impact. SkyTrak points out that this saves the up to 8 feet other units need behind the hitting area.
- SkyTrak FAQ: a minimum indoor space of 10 ft wide x 10 ft deep with enough ceiling for your longest club.
- SkyTrak room guide: a room depth of 17 ft offers a comfortable setting once you add an enclosure, your stance and space behind you.
Square Golf's units also sit beside the ball; we didn't find a published room minimum from Square Golf, so use the SkyTrak figures as a guide. Read more about the two technologies in our radar vs camera explainer, and see how SkyTrak's current models compare in our SkyTrak+ review.
SkyTrak studio sizes and minimum rooms
If you're considering a complete enclosure package, SkyTrak publishes both the studio footprint and the room it needs:
| Studio | Footprint (W x D x H) | Minimum room (W x D x H) | Ideal room (W x D x H) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio 8' | 8 ft x 4 ft x 7 ft 6 in | 8.5 x 15 x 8 ft | 9–12 x 16–19 x 8–9 ft |
| Studio 10' | 10 ft x 5 ft 4 in x 8 ft 6 in | 11 x 16 x 9 ft | 12–14 x 17–20 x 9–10 ft |
| Studio 12' | 12 ft x 5 ft 4 in x 8 ft 6 in | 13 x 16 x 9 ft | 14–16 x 17–20 x 9–10 ft |
| Studio 13' Deep | 13 ft x 10 ft x 10 ft | 14 x 17 x 10 ft 6 in | 15–17 x 18–20 x 11+ ft |
Packages built on these studios are compared in our best golf simulator for home guide.
How to measure your room, step by step
- Measure the ceiling at the exact spot where you'll swing, not the room average. Note beams, ducts, lights and garage-door tracks.
- Measure the width at the hitting position, wall to wall, and subtract anything that sticks out (shelves, a parked car's mirror, a water heater).
- Measure the depth from the wall behind the golfer to the wall where the screen or net will go.
- Pick your hitting position. For a radar unit, the ball needs 8 or more feet in front and 5 to 9 feet behind for the device. For a camera unit, leave room for your stance and backswing behind the ball.
- Enter the numbers in the calculator above and read both verdicts. If radar is "no fit" but camera is "fit", that's your answer.
- Do the driver test with the mat on the floor.
A laser distance measure makes steps 1 to 3 a one-person job, especially the ceiling height over your swing spot. Bosch rates the GLM100-23 to 100 ft at 1/16 in accuracy, far more than any garage or basement needs.
Common mistakes
- Measuring the room, not the swing spot. A 10-foot ceiling with a light fixture or garage-door track above the ball is really a 9-foot ceiling.
- Forgetting the enclosure depth. A deep enclosure eats feet from the front of the room before you count the ball-to-screen gap.
- Using minimums as targets. Owners frequently find a foot or two more than the minimum gives cleaner reads and more comfort.
- Ignoring left-handers. If they'll play, plan the width now.
- Buying the launch monitor first. The room should decide between radar and camera, not the other way around.
FAQ
What ceiling height do you need for a golf simulator?
Plan on at least 9 feet for a full driver swing. FlightScope calls 9 feet the absolute minimum and recommends 10 to 12 feet, and SkyTrak says 10 feet offers ample clearance for most golfers, though many say 9 feet is enough. Tall golfers and upright swings need more.
Can you have a golf simulator with an 8 ft ceiling?
Sometimes, but not reliably with a driver. SkyTrak's smallest studio enclosure is 7 ft 6 in tall and lists an 8 ft minimum ceiling, but SkyTrak also notes that a standard golfer needs at least a 9-foot ceiling to swing a driver safely. With 8 feet, take slow practice swings with every club first; you may be limited to irons.
What are good golf simulator room dimensions?
A comfortable target is about 12 ft wide, 16 to 17 ft deep and 10 ft high. FlightScope recommends at least 12 ft W x 10 ft H x 16 ft L for its Mevo Gen2, and SkyTrak finds 17 ft of depth comfortable for its side-of-ball units.
How much space do you need behind the ball for a launch monitor?
It depends on the unit. Garmin places the R10 6 to 8 ft behind the ball, Rapsodo places the MLM2PRO and MLM2XPRO about 7.5 ft behind, FlightScope places the Mevo Gen2 7 to 9 ft behind, and Voice Caddie places the SC4 Pro about 5 ft behind. Side-of-ball units like SkyTrak and Square Golf need no space behind the ball.
How wide does a golf simulator room need to be?
At least 10 feet to swing a driver safely, per SkyTrak, and about 12 feet for a comfortable feel. Add 1 to 2 feet if both right- and left-handed golfers will use the bay, so each can stand centered.
